California Creatives Illuminate Grand Rapids University Prep Academy

We once again demonstrated our commitment to reshaping education and career paths with a memorable classroom visit at Grand Rapids University Prep Academy by San Francisco's Cass Taylor and Hollywood's Phillip Boutte, Jr. The visit embodies our dedication to revolutionizing educational pathways and career opportunities in the creative industries. Through their engagement with approximately 30 students in Ms. Hanley's art class, these industry luminaries, hailing from two of the West Coast's creative capitals, brought their unique journeys and professional experiences to students in West Michigan.

Cass Taylor, the owner of San Francisco-based consulting firm Sixteen Twenty and former Sports Marketing Manager at Adobe, has an illustrious career marked by significant contributions to marketing and brand strategies. His work involved collaborations with major sports organizations like the WNBA and the National Women's Soccer League. As a leader in visual storytelling and brand strategy, Taylor has contributed to high-level accounts, including Coca-Cola, Nike, and T-Mobile, showcasing his ability to blend artistic sensibilities with corporate objectives.

Taylor's story is one of continuous evolution. He spoke eloquently about how his love for art has grown and transformed throughout his career. From his early days to his current role, Taylor illustrated that his artistic passion influenced each step in his career path. His journey is a testament to the idea that one can reach unexpected heights in the creative industry with dedication and meaningful relationships.

Phillip Boutte, Jr. stands as a testament to artistic excellence and representation. As a co-founder of 9B Collective, the world's first Black-Owned Concept Art Studio, he has been pivotal in promoting inclusivity in the entertainment industry. Boutte Jr.'s portfolio is studded with contributions to blockbuster films like 'Black Panther,' 'Inception,' and 'Captain Marvel,' highlighting his role in shaping some of Hollywood's most iconic visuals.

Boutte, Jr. shared how his deep-seated passion for drawing and representation has influenced his career. From working on major Hollywood blockbusters to co-founding 9B Collective, his journey underscores the power of passion in driving professional decisions and success. Boutte, Jr.'s story is particularly impactful as he highlighted the importance of representation and how his background as an artist of color has played a crucial role in strengthening and diversifying the film industry.

Both speakers underscored a crucial message: art can be a sustainable and fulfilling career. They encouraged students to view their artistic interests not just as hobbies but as thriving career paths. This message was especially resonant as they shared their experiences as artists of color, using their unique backgrounds to succeed in their fields and make an impact.

Through their personal experiences and insights, Taylor and Boutte, Jr. inspired the students at Grand Rapids University Prep Academy, showing them the endless possibilities that await in the world of creative arts. Their visit was a powerful reminder of our commitment to making connections and expanding awareness of possible creative careers.

The day's highlight was the personal interaction between the speakers and students. Students heard about the speakers' experiences and received direct feedback and encouragement on their artistic endeavors.

The impact was palpable. Students who are typically reserved engaged actively and sought advice on careers in the arts. Ms. Hanley noted the session's empowering effect on her students.
