2023 Mosaic Mobile Winner Nuha Hussein’s Journey of Confidence and Creativity

As we gear up for the 2024 Mosaic Mobile film competition, we're excited to catch up with past winners like Nuha Hussein, who took home the first-place award in 2023. Mosaic Mobile challenges high school students to create powerful short films using only their mobile devices, emphasizing creativity and storytelling.

This year, with the theme "Kaleidoscope," a prop of paperclips, and the phrase "Every Piece Matters," the competition is set to inspire even more innovative ideas from student filmmakers.

Nuha’s experience with Mosaic Mobile has shaped her creative journey, from boosting her confidence to inspiring her to pursue a future in film. Now a senior at East Kentwood High School, Nuha continues to explore her storytelling passion through PBS Student Reporting Labs and documentary-style productions, while eagerly preparing for the upcoming 2024 competition. Here’s a look at her journey and advice for this year’s participants.

Mosaic Film Experience: Where are you now?

Nuha Hussein: I’m currently a senior in high school and involved with PBS Student Reporting Labs, projecting my storytelling skills into the real world. I’ve been connecting my passion for cinema with photography and documentary-style production with local bands and my high school athletics (East Kentwood High School).

Mosaic Film Experience: How did participating in Mosaic Mobile impact your approach to storytelling and creativity?

Nuha Hussein: Participating in Mosaic Mobile boosted my confidence in my creative abilities, encouraging me to take risks and explore new ideas in my schoolwork. I now tend to look at more creative perspectives when I do projects because of my participation in Mosaic Mobile!

Mosaic Film Experience: What skills did you develop during the competition that have been useful in your academic journey?

Nuha Hussein: Confidence, again. I often hesitated to let people see my projects, but allowing my work to be seen by the public and getting positive reactions really pushed me to do more.

Mosaic Film Experience: What advice would you give to students participating in this year's competition?

Nuha Hussein: Go all out. Don’t hold back any ideas, and do what you think is right for your art. You are creative in your own way, and everything you do is unique. The world needs your voice, your vision, and your distinct perspective.

Mosaic Film Experience: How has Mosaic Mobile influenced your current goals or projects?

Nuha Hussein: Mosaic allowed me to set a goal for my future: film. It’s not what I NEED to do, but what I WANT to do. Having Mosaic Mobile as my first official film festival and award show has encouraged me the most to continue it in the future.

I encourage all students to participate in Mosaic Mobile. It is such a fun experience, and you do what you love! I have such big ideas and cannot wait to participate in the upcoming 2024 Mosaic Mobile!
