Power of Abundance: Peter Chhum Shares Insights on Storytelling and Social Media

At the 2024 Mosaic Event, students had the opportunity to hear from Peter Chhum, a West Michigan native and Los Angeles-based Senior Manager of Social Media Strategy at MasterClass. Peter's inspiring presentation highlighted his career path, the importance of foundational storytelling principles, and the mindset shifts that have helped him succeed in the creative industry.

From West Michigan to MasterClass

Peter, a Holland High School and Grand Valley State University graduate, shared his journey from an intern at WOOD TV8 to working on groundbreaking campaigns in Los Angeles. Reflecting on his early career, Peter credited his ability to adapt and willingness to embrace new opportunities as key factors in his success.

"Each role, from videographer to producer, gave me valuable experiences that prepared me for the next step," he explained.

His passion for storytelling and social media eventually led him to work with global brands, crafting impactful campaigns that resonate with diverse audiences.

The Foundations of Storytelling

Peter emphasized that great storytelling, whether in film, social media, or advertising, starts with answering five fundamental questions: who the audience is, what the message is, where the story will be shared, when is the right time to tell it, and why the story is important. These principles apply universally, from TikTok videos to movie scripts, ensuring that every piece of content connects with its intended audience.

"These principles apply to everything from TikTok videos to movie scripts," he explained. "Every piece of content starts with understanding the audience and crafting a message that connects."

To illustrate these concepts, Peter shared examples from his work, including a campaign merging SpongeBob SquarePants with NFL branding, which creatively combined Easter eggs and humor to engage both fans and casual viewers.

A Mindset of Abundance

One of the most impactful parts of Peter's presentation was his advice on embracing an abundance mindset. He encouraged students to let go of comparisons and focus on their own growth and opportunities.

"When you operate from scarcity, you feel like there's not enough for everyone, or that someone else's success takes away from yours," Peter explained. "But an abundance mindset helps you see the endless possibilities around you and reminds you that you are enough."

Empowering the Next Generation of Storytellers

Peter’s presentation left students with actionable advice for their own journeys:

  • Take the next step: Even if you're unsure, each step leads to valuable experiences and growth.

  • Be kind and collaborative: Success in creative industries often comes from relationships built on trust and respect.

  • Trust the process: There's no single right answer. Every experience helps you figure it out.

  • Stay curious: Seek out opportunities to learn and grow, even if they're outside your comfort zone.

Peter's presentation was a reminder that storytelling isn't just about crafting narratives; it's about connecting with people and creating meaningful experiences. His journey from West Michigan to the global stage shows students that with persistence, creativity, and the right mindset, they can turn their passions into thriving careers.
