15 years of stories, skills, success
For 15 years, Mosaic Film Experience has worked to close a gap: talented young people being overlooked simply because they lacked mentors, tools, and a platform for their voice. It's never been a question of ability — it's been a question of access. Since 2012, we've grown from a single event into a hub of opportunity that meets students throughout their journey, empowering them to own their narratives and step into the futures they imagine.
Mission
The Mosaic Film Experience is an innovative educational platform that empowers underrepresented youth to explore emerging and creative careers through the power of storytelling.
Vision
Using digital storytelling as a tool for learning, we aim to level the playing field for students across barriers created by economic status, race, gender, disability, or geographic location.

Years in the making
The Mosaic Film Experience, founded in 2012 by Skot Welch, was positioned as a pioneering innovation initiative focused on engaging underrepresented youth in digital media and storytelling.
Over the years, the organization has evolved from hosting film-centered events to providing year-round educational programming, including a full-day student event, mobile film competition, and digital storytelling.
Collaborations with schools, companies, municipalities, museums, and art organizations have expanded its reach, touching over 40,000 students with innovative and inspiring content. In response to the challenges of the pandemic, Mosaic successfully pivoted to an online delivery of “the experience.”
In 2022, “the experience” returned to in-person events, hosting their annual gathering at Celebration Cinema! Studio Park in downtown Grand Rapids.
The Mosaic Film Experience is further refining its mission, focusing on career exploration, workforce development, and experiential learning, continuing its commitment to creativity, media literacy, and providing career pathway opportunities in the creative and emerging industries.
